Add Some AI Extras

As higher ed hopes to harness AI’s power, pre-conference sessions focus on implementing AI-powered innovations AI has cemented its role in higher education, prompting students, faculty, and administrators to continue to explore its potential.

If you’re hoping to grow your AI know-how and immerse yourself in AI learning, you might want to register for one of the many AI pre-conference workshops that take place on Monday, October 21. As you explore the conference agenda, here are some AI highlights to put on your calendar–these require a separate fee and/or separate registration, so don’t wait too long to sign up):

Positioning IT to Lead Strategic Change in the Age of AI: Today’s higher education environment has become a dynamic place of change. Savvy technology leaders use the opportunity to reposition technology and data to play a more strategic role in supporting, enhancing, and leading their institutions, thinking broadly about developing levers of change and expanding their sphere of influence across the campus community.

Empowering Educators: Embracing Change and Redefining Identities in the AI Landscape: In this immersive and interactive workshop, participants will embark on a journey to collectively explore and define our relationships with generative AI tools. Through playful and guided reflections, discussions, and hands-on activities, we will map our relationships with generative AI, refine teaching and/or administrative philosophies, share guided reflections on the generative potential of AI in teaching and learning, and undertake case study analyses of ethical dilemmas in generative AI integration.

These activities will empower educators to chart a forward-thinking path in harnessing the capabilities of AI while leveraging our distinctly human abilities and advocating for our ability to collaborate harmoniously with the tools that have become ubiquitous in our professional environments.

Design, Dialogue, Dice: An AI Game-Making Workshop: From novice to expert, this workshop is intended to engage small groups in a collaborative design process of
creating a tabletop board game from ideation, to concept, to user testing and feedback, to a playable artifact. Small groups will partner with an AI chatbot from start to finish to empower their creativity, stress test their ideas and designs, and quickly iterate on prototypes. What normally takes months and sometimes years to create, we will explore how to create a viable tabletop game in mere hours with the assistance of generative artificial intelligence.

(Re)Designing Assessments in the Age of Generative AI: This session will examine the impact of generative AI on university assessment practices and provide a
comprehensive framework for designing effective and ethical assessments in the digital age. Participants will be guided through the evolution of assessment,
highlighting the shift from traditional formative and summative approaches to focusing on assessment for learning. The session will explore the variety of ways students can demonstrate their learning, including through diverse artifacts, interactions, and feedback mechanisms. Generative AI introduces serious challenges to assessment. To address these challenges a framework will be discussed that balances sound pedagogy, the well-being of both students and instructors, academic integrity, and security considerations. Practical examples will be provided to illustrate the application of this framework to the design of multiple types of assessments.
