Kion, the leading automated CloudOps platform for multicloud, today announced the availability of Kion version 3.11, introducing new features for Identity and Access Management (IAM), compliance automation, and FinOps. These new capabilities are advantageous for organizations, including higher education institutions, looking to implement policy-based controls and enforcements to better manage and automate their multicloud infrastructure. Along with showcasing these new capabilities at EDUCAUSE, the company will also be presenting a session with Northwestern University and Texas A&M University on creating a culture of accountability using a “governance by default” approach to cloud operations.

AI, Values, and the Future of Higher Education at EDUCAUSE 2024
The conference is in full swing with sessions touching on a wide array of topics. But there is still one unavoidable conversation point. Jenay Robert, Senior Researcher for EDUCAUSE broke it down for me early—the growing impact of AI. She emphasizes the need to integrate AI technologies thoughtfully, starting from human values. She reflects on the humanistic approach to AI, urging educators to examine how these tools affect teaching, student engagement, and institutional operations. She also highlights the importance of data governance, privacy policies, and the future applications of AI, stressing the importance of translating insights into practical actions. Have a listen:

EDUCAUSE Sneak Peek with Jarret Cummings
Senior Advisor for Policy and Government Relations Jarret Cummings Shares Insights into Higher Ed IT Policy Challenges
Click below to listen to the full conversation:
eCampus: We’re just a few weeks away from EDUCAUSE 2024 in San Antonio. Could you give us a preview of your session and share some insights on IT policy in 2024?
Jarret Cummings: Absolutely. Every year at the conference, we review major policy issues affecting the EDUCAUSE community, and 2024 has been particularly eventful. One issue we’ve been pulled into is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) proposed cyber incident reporting regulations. Though these aren’t finalized yet, we’ve had to compile our community’s views and concerns about how higher education fits into this process.
Additionally, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released its final regulations for web and mobile app accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II. This impacts all public colleges and universities, and we expect these regulations will eventually extend to private institutions as well. Lastly, research cybersecurity has been a hot topic, with new guidelines issued by the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Fitting all of this into 45 minutes at EDUCAUSE will be a challenge, but we’re up for it!

EDUCAUSE Sneak Peek with Kathe Pelletier
Senior Director of Community Programs Kathe Pelletier on Higher Ed Trends and Technology to Track
Click below to hear the full conversation:
eCampus: Can you give us a sneak peek into some of the top trends you’ll be discussing at the event? Specifically, trends that don’t involve AI?
Kathe Pelletier: [Laughs] That’s a tricky one! It’s tough to talk about anything without AI coming into the conversation these days. But yes, one trend I’m excited about is data governance and data management. Institutions are realizing they need to get their “data house” in order, which includes building a strong data culture and improving data literacy. This is especially important for those planning to implement custom AI tools.
Another area I’m seeing a lot of interest in is workforce development, especially with a focus on human-centered leadership. There’s a push to give people space to innovate and grow without overwhelming them, which ties into broader conversations about workforce culture.
eCampus: You mention workforce culture. Coming out of the pandemic, it feels like higher ed has seen more permanent changes—particularly around hybrid learning. Do you agree?
